Limit salt, caffeine and alcohol. Actually, only about 1/3 of people respond to salt restriction, but we don’t know which ones, so just advise everybody to.
If you are overweight….don’t be
Get regular exercise
Get a good nights sleep.
All natural, but no magic wand.

So you only had hypertension after giving birth to Benn. The answer is simple: Get rid of Benn. (Hey, that was a joke, really, just a joke.)
I agree mostly with SkepDoc’s suggestions. I recognize your desire to deal with this issues naturally. However, I would first talk with the doctor who prescribed the meds for you. Since I ain’t a doctor, I would say a possible solution is that you could increase your meds temporarily when your BP shoots up. As the BP lowers, reduce your meds. Hypertension is sometimes related to genetics. Maybe you should see a cardiologist if the problem gets more serious.
Besides the advice about cutting back on salt, caffeine, etc., I would also look into the possibility that there may be emotional triggers when your BP spikes up. Are you more stressed out about something? Is there some way to unwind, like listening to relaxing music, meditating, watching a comedy on TV or DVD? If you have a home BP monitor, do you notice that when you relax, your BP starts to come down? Not all BP problems are related to stress, but it is something to look into.
I would emphasize exercise on a regular basis, not just when your BP shoots up. You would have to find out what works the best for you and your BP. Stretching, Pilates and yoga are some alternatives. Mild aerobics can be helpful to many. Even a brisk walk can help. There’s no need to be an Olympic athlete to get healthful benefits from exercise. Besides, turn on your iPod or CD player and it can be fun. I speak from experience. I wish you well.

Natural ways to lower the blood pressure include losing weight, exercising regularly and going on a low salt low fat diet. Unfortunately, this methods may not be enough so you need to keep taking those pills. Be suspicious of claims that this and that herb will lower your BP.

A healthy diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, and quality fish oils and other good omega 3 fats, and regular physical activity should help.
Here are some other natural/herbal suggestions (and you need not be suspicious of them):
Cayenne Pepper is probably the fastest way to lower high blood pressure. Either mix one teaspoon of cayenne pepper with half a cup of luke-warm water and stir, or better still, mix two tablespoons of honey with two teaspoons of cayenne pepper and boil them with a glass of water and drink when it is warm. Not only will this bring great relief to your high blood pressure, but it also tastes good!
Hawthorn berries have rightly been called "food for the heart". They lower blood pressure as well as protecting arterial walls and preventing and treating hypertension and angina.
Two Evening Primrose oil pills a day can drop blood pressure about 10 points off of both the bottom and top numbers.
Cutting out all caffeine can lower blood pressure by 10-15 points off the top and 8-10 points off the bottom. Likewise avoid alcohol and smoking
Eat lots of garlic, preferably raw minced garlic. Studies have proven that garlic significantly lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Likewise cinnamon can help lower blood pressure, as well as lower circulating blood glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and overall cholesterol.
Mix 1/2 onion juice and 1/2 honey. Take two tablespoons once a day for one to two weeks.
Eat one Papaya on an empty stomach daily for a month. Do not eat anything after for about two hours.

5. Limit fats and increase intake of fruits and veggies

There are a number of herbal and homeopathic remedies that are well known for their ability to control high blood pressure with great success. Unlike conventional medicines, which do not always address the root cause, natural remedies can do this without the risk of side effects or addiction.
In keeping with a holistic approach to health, Naturopaths recognize that high blood pressure may be a sign or symptom of imbalance in the body and thus recommend a combination of lifestyle changes and natural remedies to remove the causes of the high blood pressure, rather than simply just treating the symptoms.
Remember to always source your natural remedies from a reputable company in order to ensure safety, efficacy, and correct therapeutic dosage.
Do not make changes to your prescription medication without first consulting your doctor.
